MYSTERY DICE

YOU WILL NEED: 3 dice

• the first player throws the dice but keeps the scores hidden
• they add up the totals. For example 4+2+3=9 and say the total out loud!
• they then take away one dice and show the remaining 2 to the other player, who must guess the value of the missing dice.
• if they are right, it is their turn to thrown the dice.

(Parents please note: this activity will help your child to practice adding the taking away small numbers. It is important to be able to work out these sums and then, eventually, to learn the answers off by heart in order to instantly know the answer! This game is moving towards this.)

MYSTERY CARD

Dear Parents or Carer
This game will help your child to practise adding and subtracting small numbers. A lot of arithmetic will be required in the course of playing this game, and all of the sums will be done mentally. This is very good for developing mental mathematical skills.

MYSTERY CARDS - you will need of pack of cards from which the face cards have been removed.

• place the cards in a pile, face down.
• take three cards but do not show them to your partner
• add up their values and say the answer out loud
• remove one card and place it, face down on the table
• show the two remaining cards to ypour partner. They must guess what the missing card is. If they are rights, they can take three cards and test you.
• If you are really daring, try using four cards with two cards face down on the table.

SEVEN TO WIN GAME

YOU WILL NEED:
a pack of cards with the face cards removed and a pile of counters (dried beeans, buttons, squares cut from paper will do)

• place the counters within easy reach
• deal 2 cards to each player
• each player turns over their cards and adds them up
• compare scores. The person with the highest score takes a counter from the pile
• put those cards back on the bottom of the pile
• deal out 2 more cards to each player and continue the game
• the first to collect 7 counters is the winner.
  

Dear Parents or Carer, This activity will help your child to practise adding up by counting up two sets of things (such as hearts, or spades, etc) A lot of counting will be required and it is important to make sure that chidlren point to the card as they say the number so that they count correctly.
